10 Ways to Calm a Crying Baby

Looking for creative ways to soothe your baby's cries? Try these ten ideas for making distress disappear.

  1. Take a Ride
The car's rhythm may soothe your child and put him to sleep.
  2. Rock A-Bye
A turn on a swing or rocking chair is ideal.
  3. Go for a Dip
Try a quick bath to relax and distract her.
  4. Mirror Magic
Hold him in front of a mirror to charm him with his own face.
  5. Comfort Switch
Some babies only cry around their mothers. Give her a turn in someone else's arms.
  6. Motion Potion
Turn the ceiling fan on low and captivate him with its spin.
  7. Relaxing Rub
Warm a little baby oil in your hands and gently massage her body.
  8. Bed Bounce
Stand on a mattress holding your baby close to you. Lightly bounce and shift your weight from foot to foot.
  9. Music to His Ears
Sing a lullaby, keeping your voice very soft. Humming is also effective, particularly with Dad's low tones.
  10. Sweep Away Sorrow
Start your vacuum -- you can even make a recording of it running.
